The Threshers have added two new pitchers, Santo Hernandez and Jon Velasquez and a new outfielder Steve Susdorf, while Manny Ayala was released to begin the second half of the season. Additionally Yohan Flande and ex-Thresher Kyle Drabek have both been honored by being invited to the All-Star Futures game this year.
The team begins their second season facing the Florida State League's other sharks, the Jupiter Hammerheads at Jupiter beginning an eight game road trip that will include four games at Palm Beach. After this road trip the rest of the season will be chock full of home games. 38 of the remaining 62 games will be at Brighthouse Field, so hopefully the team can take advantage of the home stadium and make a run at the playoffs.
The Threshers got up early with 3 runs in the second inning and added a run in the fourth on a solo shot from Matt Rizzotti. The Hammerheads battled back though getting three in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Threshers lead to one run with the game at 4-3.
The Hammerheads would tie things at four runs each in the fifth inning, and then take the lead in the same inning with a two-out RBI to put them up 5-4 after five.
In the sixth inning the Threshers battled right back with three straight hits including a double from Steve Susdorf to lead off the inning, and RBI single from Tim Kennelly to tie it, and another double from Mike Durant to score Kennelly and put the Threshers back on top 6-5.
The Hammerheads would battle back to tie the game at 6-6 in the seventh inning, and the game would remain tied going into extra frames.
In the tenth inning the Threshers loaded the bases with no outs, but Matt Rizzotti would ground out into a rare 1-2-3 double play leaving runners at first and second and Mike Durant coming to bat. Durant would ground out to the third baseman as the Hammerheads escaped the situation still tied going to the bottom of the tenth.
The Hammerheads would get the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth, but Threshers pitcher Walter Tejeda worked out of the jam to send the game to the 11th inning still tied at 6-6.
It would go on to the twelfth still tied at 6-6 when Javis Diaz led off with a single, and then with a successful hit-and-run by Fidel Hernandez he moved to third giving the Threshers runners at the corners with no outs. After a walk to Steve Susdorf the Threshers would have bases loaded with no outs for the second consecutive inning hoping to make the most of it this time.
Matt Rizzotti was able to knock a sac fly to score Javis Diaz from third in the twelfth and put the Threshers up 7-6 going into the bottom of the inning.
Santo Hernandez would make his third appearance of the year from the bullpen looking to close things out for his team and secure a Threshers win. He walked the leadoff hitter, and then give up a sac bunt to send the runner to second and into scoring position with one out. After a fly out to center field Hernandez needed just one more out to secure the win. He would walk the next batter putting men at first and second before getting the final out of the game on a fly to left.
VIVA DEL SANTO FOR THE SAVE!
THRESHERS WIN 7-6 IN TWELVE
Matt Rizzotti gets the SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award for his 2-4 effort with a HR, and 3 RBIs including a sac fly for the game-winning RBI in the twelfth inning.
