The Clearwater Threshers won the first game of their series against the Jupiter Hammerheads on Thursday night. Drew Naylor had another strong outing from the hill, and his offense gave him plenty of support in the 7-3 win.
After falling down 1-0 in the top of the third the Threshers offense broke out in the bottom of the inning for four runs. Javis Diaz would manufacture the tying run by starting the inning with a bunt for the teams first hit, and then moved to second on a fielder's choice by Fidel Hernandez. Cody Overbeck walked, and then Diaz went to third on a wild pitch to set up Matt Rizzotti for his first RBI of the game with a single to score Diaz and send Overbeck to third.
Joel Naughton picked up the best hit of them all with a three-run shot out of the park to right field and put the Threshers on top 4-1 and the team would never look back.
They would add three more in the next frame to put things out of reach when Arlon Quiroz got it started with a double, and Jesus Villegas followed with a single. They would then execute a double steal. Fidel Hernadez would pick up two RBIs with a single, and then move to second to score on a Matt Rizzotti single for his second RBI to make the game 7-1.
Drew Naylor would eventually surrender two more runs, but it proved too little too late as the bullpen work of Walter Tejeda and Sam Walls shut the Hammerheads down to secure the win at 7-3.
Drew Naylor earned the SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award. (I'm WAY behind on updating that page, but I'll get it done and get the players who have won it the recognition they deserve.)
