The Clearwater Threshers faced the Daytona Cubs again on Friday night needing a win to keep at least a part of second place and remain alive in the FSL North Division race. Unfortunately it was the Cubs who got an early lead putting the pressure on the sharks.
The Threshers weren't going to go down easy though, and they manufactured a run with a lead off hit from Arlon Quiroz in the third. A sac bunt from Javis Diaz moved him to second, a stolen base, and a sac fly from Dominic Brown got the RBI to tie things at 1-1. The team was able to load the bases after the run thanks to a couple of Cubs errors, and then scored two more runs to go up 3-1 on Yonderman Rodriguez's 2-RBI single before the inning ended.
Meanwhile Drew Naylor took control on the mound sending the Cubs down 3-up & 3-down in the third, fourth and fifth to take the game to the sixth with the Clearwater Threshers still up 3-1.
In the sixth Mike Durant crushed his second homer in two nights to add to the Threshers lead as the team went up 4-1, followed by an inside the park home run which was officially scored a hit and a 3-base error to Arlon Quiroz. Suddenly the Threshers found themselves comfortably ahead 5-1 before the inning was over.
The Cubbies would try to get things going in the bottom of the sixth with a lead off single, and then an error by Jesus Villegas in his 2009 Threshers debut to leave runners at first and second with no outs. Naylor manged to get one out that advanced runner to second and third, but then got a bit riled up with a couple of balls in the dirt to bring on a visit from Dave Lundquist out of the dugout. Naylor then surrendered an unearned run when Arlon Quiroz had an error dropping a ball near the left field foul line, but the Threshers did get an out on the play to go 5-2 with two outs. The error marked the sixth in the game between the two teams. Fortunately the Threshers got out of the inning with no more damage and went to the seventh inning still up 5-2.
In the top of the seventh Dominic Brown walked and scored on a Tim Kennelly home run to get the Threshers a 7-2 lead as the teams went into the seventh inning stretch.
Drew Naylor came out for a seventh inning of work for the Threshers after the stretch. He surrendered a double after one out, but then escaped the inning with no further damage to the scoreboard.
After seven, still Threshers 7-2 with the team looking to coast to victory.
The eighth inning would bring on the third pitcher for the Cubs to face the bottom of the Threshers order. Naughton, Durant, and Quiroz would go down in order sending it to the bottom of the eighth with Michael Schwimer taking over on the hill for Drew Naylor. The Cubs would get one infield single but got nothing else in the inning. It was onto the final frame with the Threshers dominating at 7-2.
The team could get nothing in the top of the ninth, and it was then up to Walter Tejeda to get the Threshers out of the game as he came in for his first work of the year fresh off of the DL. Tejeda gave up one hit, but nothing else as the Threshers coasted to a 7-2 win in the game.
Drew Naylor earns the SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award for his tremendous pitching effort. Drew gave up just one earned run on five hits with six batters punched out and no walks.
