The Clearwater Threshers sanpped a two-game losing streak by picking up a win on Saturday night against the Daytona Cubs to avoid a sweep in the series.
With Yohan Flande on the mound the odds for the team seemed good as he brought a 4-2 record into the game, but the Cubs were the first to hit the scoreboard when they picked up a run in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead.
The Threshers were held hitless through three, but in the fourth inning they took control of the game and never looked back. Fidel Hernandez picked up a one-out hit to break up the no hitter, and then Tim Kennelly crushed a two-out home baser to plate two and give the Threshers a lead. Mike Durant immediately followed with his fourth long ball of the year to make the lead 3-1. After a Yonderman Rodriguez single, and a Derrick Mitchell RBI double the Threshers lead 4-1 at the end of the inning.
In the fifth inning the Daytona squad picked up a run to cut the deficit to 4-2 but the Threshers tacked on runs in the seventh and eighth to make it 6-2, and would go on to win 6-3 with the Cubs getting a desparation run in the ninth that was too little too late.
Tim Kennelly earns the SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award for his two-run blast to give the Threshers a lead in the fourth that they would never relinquish.
