SCHMIDT LIST PLAYER-OF-THE-DAY
The Clearwater Threshers got some much needed revenge on Lakeland on Saturday night after suffering a devastating late rally by the Flying Tigers on Friday night. While the teams were close through five innings the Thresher piled it on over the last four innings to down the Lakeland squad comfortably 9-3 in the end.
Despite a valiant rally by Lakeland on Friday they went down with a wimper on Saturday as the Threshers' offense overpowered them late.
The game got off late after Hurricane Gustav pelted Florida with rain for most of the day. Rain held off long enough for 8 1/2 innings of ball on Saturday before one last rain delay. With the Threshers ahead by 6 runs the Lakeland squad conceded defeat at the delay and the Threshers went home winners.
Thank you to all of this years players for making the season fun at the park. I know the record was not what anyone had hoped for, but hopefully it was a learning experience for everyone. That is what the minors are about. We'd love to see wins, but mostly we want to see these guys move closer to their dreams of playing in the big leagues.
The Threshers have one last game at Lakeland on Sunday afternoon, and though nothing important is on the line it will be the difference between who finishes fourth or who finishes fifth in the division. Darren Byrd is scheduled to start the game for the Threshers in the final game. He has been HOT HOT HOT in the second half of the season. We can only hope he continues his winning ways and earns the team a win to finish the season in a high note.
