SCHMIDT LIST PLAYER-OF-THE-DAY
The Clearwater Threshers were looking to close out their final series of the season against the Sarasota Reds with a sweep on Friday night, but were unable to seal the deal as the Reds rallied to overtake the Threshers in the end.
The Reds jumped on the Threshers starter Joe Savery early for a run in the first and added two more in the third inning to go up 3-0. The Threshers battled back in the game to take a 4-0 lead in the 4th thanks in part to some defensive struggles by the Reds due to bizarre wind conditions created by tropical storm Fay.
The Reds tied the game in the sixth and then took advantage of a defensive micue that would have ended the inning to add three more unearned runs to go up 7-4. They added another in the 8th that sealed the win while the Threshers offense was unable to plate anything else.
I appologize for the late report, but I came home to watch the USA baseball team face Japan in the olympics and was sidetracked until the wee hours of the moning by that game. Two of last year's Threshers were competing for team USA as they battled Japan for the bronze medal.
