The Clearwater Threshers came out on Monday looking to the Phillies 1st round draft pick Joe Savery to get them a win. The team's offense gave Savery some help by grabbing an early lead in the second inning thanks to a Qunitin Berry double that scored Tuffy Gosewisch from third, however in the top of the third the Manatees took advantage of a walk from Joe Savery and an error by the Threshers' third baseman Welinson Baez to tie the game at one run each.
Once again the Threshers' offense responded in the bottom of the inning when PJ Antoniato led off with a hit and then Matt Spencer crushed his fourth home run of the season to give the Threshers a 3-1 lead after four innings of play. (The fact that in all other games that Spencer had homered this year the team had won the game so this seemed to be a good omen.)
Unfortunately the Manatees seemed oblivious to Matt Spencer's mojo as they came back in the sixth inning taking advantage of two walks and four hits off of Joe Savery to score five runs to take a commanding 6-3 lead on the Threshers.
At that point things seemed all but done for the Threshers. The team had not overcome a three-run deficit this late in a game all season, and with the number of runners the team had left on base over the course of the game and based on the team's previous record on the year it seemed they would record another game in the loss column.
In the seventh inning the Threshers made things interesting when John Urick homered to score Clay Harris who had led off the inning with a single, but the team still trailed 6-5 going into the eighth inning.
Brian Schlittter came out of the bullpen to keep the Manatees scoreless for the seventh and the top of the eighth innings giving the team's offense time to regroup and hopefully get the team back into position to get a win that they desperately needed.
Fidel Hernandez would lead off the eighth with a single and move to third when Quintin Berry reached on an error. PJ Antoniato then grounded into a double play but Fidel Hernandez scored in the process to give the team the tying run and enough hope for a win. Matt Spencer then singled, folloed by another single from Clay Harris, and then Johnny U drove in what would prove to be the game winning run on a single of his own to roght field.
Sam Walls cam in out of the pen to record three strike outs i the ninth inning to suffocate the Manatees and secure the Threshers' most dramatic win of the year 7-6.
.
John Urick & Sam Walls each earned the
SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award for their efforts in the game, although it was definitely a solid effort from ALL members of the team to get this win. Every player in the starting lineup had at least one hit, and the home crowd definitely appreciated the team's effort.
