When the Clearwater Threshers starter Edgar Garcia surrendered a home run to the lead off hitter for the Brevard County Manatees it looked like the Threshers could be in trouble early. Fortunately Garcia recovered quickly, and the Clearwater offense took over to get the team a win.
In the second inning the Clearwater Threshers used some terrific plate discipline to get four walks and two singles to take a 2-0 lead. They would add another run in the third inning when John Urick crushed his first home run of the year to up the team's lead to 3-0.
In the fifth inning the Manatees tied the game with a lead off walk followed by a triple that would later score, but Edgar Garcia once again buckled down and held the Manatees scoreless into the seventh inning. Meanwhile the Threshers offense once again took control scoring three runs of their own in the fifth inning to go up 6-3, and relied on Brian Schlitter and Sam Walls out of the bullpen to shut down the Manatees for the rest of the night.
Brian Schlitter & John Urick split the
SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award for their performances, but really it was a solid team effort that got the team a win tonight.
In other news: Clay Harris returned to the lineup tonight after starting the season on the DL, and helped out right away with a run and an RBI in the game. Clay was an instrumental part of the team's FSL Championship run last season, and his presence can only help to spark the team.
After a very slow start Welinson Baez has been on fire lately. He has hit .441 over the last nine games with 5 multi-hit games. He has driven in 11 runs over that period and scored 5 times with 3 doubles, and a triple.
Gus Milner also has been hot with the bat and has an eleven game hitting streak alive. He has hit .453 over that period with 10 RBIs, and 9 runs with four doubles.
Despite the team's 10-19 record they seem to be finally gelling as a unit and appear to be headed in the right direction. Let's hope the team's success will continue, and they can get back into the hunt soon. The Western Division of the FSL is a very tight race, so just one good streak by the team would get them right back where they need to be. There is plenty of baseball left to play this year, so the team cannot be counted out yet!
