Threshers Jump on Cubs Early on Monday Night

Cubs Rally Late to Take Threshers in the End

1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E
Threshers 1 2 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 3 6 0
Cubs 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 3 - 4 8 1

The Threshers headed back to Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona on Monday night for the second game of four in the series. The team dropped the opener, and were looking for a win on Monday. It did not take long for the boys to get on the board when Quintin Berry led off the game with a walk, stole second and moved to third on a hit from Adrian Cardenas. John Urick then knocked a sac fly to right field to pick up an RBI as "Q!" scored from third.

In the second inning the Threshers once again picked up a lead off walk this time by Welinson Baez, and followed it with an RBI double from Tuffy Gosewisch to go up 2-0. Gosewisch would move to third on an out by Fidel Hernandez, and then scored on a passed ball to put the team up 3-0 before the at-bat ended.

The Threshers had a few other scoring chances thanks to nine Cubs walks through the first six innings to go with five Threshers hits over that period, including a 3-3 effort by Tuffy Gosewisch in his first three at bats. Unfortuantely two players were caught stealing, one was picked off at first base, and Gosewisch was thrown out at the plate trying to go home on a hit by Gus Milner. In the sixth the team loaded the bases with one out on a double by Gosewisch in his third at bat, a walk by Fidel Hernandez, and an infield single by Quintin Berry. Adrian Cardenas then struck out for a second out, and Tuffy was thrown out at home for the third out when the catcher momentarily lost track of the pitch and the got him in a rundown, then threw back to second, and finally back to home to get Gosewisch there.

Meanwhile the Threshers' starting pitcher Edgar Garcia kept the Cubs offense quiet giving up just three hits with six Ks and no walks through five innings, but with two outs in the sixth inning the Cubs picked up two hits to give the them their first scoring chance in the game. The next batter of the inning worked the count full and then picked up the inning's third hit leaving runners at the corners and plating the Cubs first run to cut the deficit to 3-1. Fortunately Garcia was able to pick up his seventh K of the game to end the inning and send the game to the seventh inning with the Threshers still on top 3-1.

The Threshers would go down in order for the first time in the seventh inning sending the game to the 7th-inning stretch with our club still on top 3-1.

In the bottom of the seventh Jay Miller came into the game as a defensive replacement for Jake Blalock, and Brian Schlitter got up in the bullpen to start warming up. Edgar Garcia induced two fly balls to center field to record the first two outs of the inning and then sent the next batter down on strikes for his eighth K sending the game to the eighth inning of play and matching his longest outing of the season.

In the top of the eighth Gus Milner singled to left, and then stretched it two second on a fielding error, but was picked off at second with Welinson Baez going to first on a fielder's choice. Tuffy Gosewisch picked up his first out by flying to center, bringing Fidel Hernadez up who would strike out to end the top of the seventh and send in to the bottom of the eighth.

Edgar Garcia would return to the hill for the eighth and pick up his ninth strike out on the first batter of the inning. After giving up a single, Garcia walked the next batter for his first walk of the game, and that would be the end of his night as Brian Schlitter was summoned from the bullpen by Thresher's manager Razor Shines with runners at first and second and one out in the books.

Schlitter walked his first batter to load the bases for the Cubbies, and then a hit liner over Jay Miller's head in left that went for a three-RBI double to put the Cubs up on top for the first time in the game at 4-3. Schlitter was able to get out of the inning with no more damage, but that brought the Threshers up for the final time of the night trailing 4-3.

The SCHMIDT LIST player of the game award would go to Tuffy Gosewisch for his 3-4 with two doubles an RBI and a run to account for two of the three Threshers runs. Edgar Garcia would share in the honor for his strong pitching effort despite the fact that he was unable to earn a win.
