The Clearwater Threshers and Sarasota Reds had a pitcher's dual going for the second time in the series tonight, and once again it would be the Threshers who came out on top.
The Reds starter Alex Smit held the Threshers hitless through three innings, but had that broken up by Jake Blalock in the fourth inning who sent a two-out home run just over the wall inside the left field foul pole to get the Threshers up 1-0. Gus Milner followed with a walk, and then scored on a triple by Jay Miller to up the lead to 2-0 for the Threshers.
The Threshers starter Tyson Brummett held the Reds hitless through four innings, but he would also have his game broken up by a home run in the fifth after a walk to tie the game at 2-2.
Pitching would continue to stymie both teams with the Reds picking up just one more hit in the game, and the Threshers held to just two more hits going into the bottom of the ninth inning.
In the team's last regulation at bat Johnny U got the team started with a crushing double that had the crowd on their feet as it looked like it could go out of the park, but bounced off the wall just short. Gus Milner then picked up his second walk to put men at first and second. Jay Miller stepped to the plate, and after battling at the plate was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Welinson Baez then took the box and knocked a shot down the corner, but it was grabbed by the third baseman to put John Urick out at home, and keep the Reds alive in the game. Tuffy Gosewisch took the batter's box next, and after three pitches was hit by the ball to reach base and drive in the game winner with Gus Milner getting the winning run.
The Threshers picked up their second win of the series by way of a bases loaded hit batsman in the ninth inning. Quite an unusual ending for a game, especially to happen twice in one series. A win is a win however, and the team and fans were happy to get it.
The SCHMIDT LIST award would go to the pitching staff with Tyson Brummett leading the way and Sam Walls securing his sixth save of the year.
