Threshers Drop Season Opener

Two Home Runs Proved the Difference for Dunedin

Season Opener 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 R H E
Bluejays 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 2 7 1
Threshers 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 0 1 9 1

The Clearwater Threshers dropped the season opener to the Dunedin Bluejays 2-1 on two home runs by the opposition.

Brad Lidge got a rehab start for the team that would supposedly give the team an advantage going into the game, but when he gave up a home run to the second batter the team was put in a hole. Lidge struck out the next batter then gave up a walk and a double following the home run but escaped with no more damage.

The Threshers tried to counter in the bottom of the first when Tuffy Gosewisch reach on an error, and then their new manager Razor Shines gambled by sending him home on a double by Adrian Cardenas. Unfortunately Gosewisch was out at home on the play, but the tone of the season was set as we knew that our team was going to battle for every run they could earn this year.

In the second inning the Threshers presumed ace for the season Joe Savery came in to pitch, and he did not disappoint the home crowd. Joe threw five innings giving up just three hits while fanning seven batters, but showed some inconsistency walking five in the process.

In the third inning the Threshers got a lead off single from shortstop Fidel Hernandez and after a K by quntin Berry Tuffy Gosewisch left the team wtih men at first and second with one out. The manager Razor Shines then again gambled sending Hernandez home on a single only to be put out at the plate. The inning would end with no more offense and the game went on.

In the seventh inning Andrew Cruse came on in relief for the team. Cruse had been a star for the team at the end of 2007 after being promoted from Lakewood. His 2008 effort got off to a shaky start however when he gave up a long out to the warning track to his firat batter and a home run to the second hitter that put the Threshers in a 2-1 deficit.

After surrendering a leadoff double in the eighth and then a ground out Andrew Cruse was replaced by Matt German who walked his first opponent, but ended the inning with two strikeouts.

In the ninth inning Nate Johnson came on for the Threshers to get a fly out, a K, and a walk before fanning the final batter to send the team into the final at-bat trailing by a run. Unfortunatley the team could not manage a first night miracle as they fell 2-1 in the end.
