After dropping two of three to the Yankees, the Threshers had fallen to four games behind the Dunedin Bluejays with just thirteen games remaining in the season. Five of those thirteen remaining games would be against the Dunedin Bluejays beginning with a double header at Dunedin on Thursday and another game at Dunedin on Friday. The two teams will face each other for the final time of the year next week with two games at Clearwater on Wednesday and Thursday.
By sitting four games back, the Threshers really had themselves in a tough spot and would have to take at least four of the five games they had against Dunedin to have any real hope of making a playoff spot. Dunedin however, had been on fire lately. Their home record in the second half of the season is 23-5, and they currently had an eight-game winning streak going.
That made tonight a true test of the Threshers' mettle. Win both games and the team would be close to controlling their own destiny. Lose both games, and the team would be all but mathematically eliminated from the playoffs. If they split the double header, then they would have to win all three of the final games against Dunedin to have much of a shot.
Well, it became "best case scenario" as the Threshers swept the Jays on the night and closed to within two games of first in the process. In the first game the team blew out the Jays despite a four-run seventh from the Jays that made the game look closer than it really was, then in the second game of the night things were a bit more nip and tuck.
The Threshers scored first in the third, but the Jays tied things in the fourth inning. In the fifth and the sixth the Threshers added runs to go up 3-1, but when it went into the final frame a win was still not secured. Brett Harker then came in from the bullpen and got one out, but then served up a home run to make the lead a tenuos 3-2, and put a pitter patter in the hearts of all in attendance. Fortunately Harker controlled the final two batters and the Threshers won again to own the night and their own destiny.
NOTE: Tonight's game wrap up will be the last game I can write up until next Wednesday. I will be in Hutchinson, KS for the weekend celebrating my grandmother's 90th birthday. I hope the boys can get a winning streak going in my absence and that I can return home to an exciting final homestand of the year that will catapult the team into the 2007 playoffs.
Player in yellow denotes the SCHMIDT List player(s) of the game.
