After outbattling the Manatees to an 8-7 win on Wednesday night, the Threshers came out on Thursday looking to keep their winning ways alive. The team capitalized in the first inning with a lead off double from Brian Burgamy who would come around to score on a fielding error with Clay Harris batting.
Ben Pfinsgraff got his second start for the Threshers since moving up from Lakewood where he was primarily a reliever. Pfinsgraff had been excellent in Lakewood with a 2.43 ERA and 38 Ks vs just 6 BB in 33.1 innings of work. He suffered a loss in his first outing as a Thresher, but came out tonight looking to prove his mettle and establish himself in the FSL.
Through the first five innings he was nearly perfect giving up just one hit and no walks enjoying that early 1-0 lead, but the Threshers' offense would need to provide more than one run if they were to support Ben.
In the sixth inning the Threshers' defense would allow the Manatees to tie the game with an unearned run evening things at 1-1 when the lead off hitter reached on a error and came around to score on a sac bunt and an RBI single. Meanwhile Pfinsgraff would get out of the inning with authority fanning the final two batters to send the game to the seventh at 1-1.
After the Threshers managed nothing in the seventh Pfinsgraff came back out after the stretch and gave up two hits but survived the inning still tied at 1-1 and left the game with a 2.25 ERA after his second start at High-A ball.
"Bear" Hill came on in relief in the eight for the Threshers and took things to the final frame by striking out two and inducing a ground out to give the Threshers one last chance to end things in regulation.
Jason Donald lead off the ninth with a single and move to second on a sac bunt from John Urick, but ended up stranded after Ks from John Suomi and Brad Harman.
Into the end of regulation it was still the Threshers' game to win if they could take things to extras. With Bear Hill returning to the mound things looked good for the Threshers but after just one out things took a turn for the worse as the Threshers fell 2-1 in the end.
Player in yellow denotes the SCHMIDT List player(s) of the game.
