The Threshers traveled across the bay to Tampa to face the Yankees on Monday, and despite a solid outing from starter Pat Overholt who went 5.2 innings with one run on six hits, seven Ks and just one walk, the offense could provide no support as the team was shut out for the first time this year.
The team managed just five hits, all singles with Welinson Baez the only player to hit twice in the game. Greg Golson got his fifth stolen base of the year, but other offensive highlights were slim.
Mike Zagurski gave up two runs in the seventh to seal the deal for the Yankees, but it was a defensive miscue in that inning that really resulted in the runs despite Zagurski being credited with two ER. With two outs the team got a player caught in a run down between first and second that could have ended the inning, but a botched play left men safe at first and third. The next pitch was good for a triple scoring two and putting the Yankees up 3-0.
The Threshers managed runners at second and third in the ninth with no outs via a Yankees error, but three straight outs gave the Evil Empire a win.
The Threshers will face these same Yankees in the second of three on Tuesday night and look to equalize the series.
Player highlited in yellow denotes the SCHMIDT List player(s) of the game.
