Well, after a streak of solid play that got the team into first place in the division, they have dropped two games in a row to fall a-half game out of first place behind the Ft. Myers Miracle. The Miracle are in town for two games Thursday and Friday, so a couple wins could put the guys right back on top.
The team actually played well enough to win on Wednesday, but a very bizarre pitching meltdown in the second inning would prove to be the team's undoing.
After getting a run in the first inning to take an early lead the Threshers defense returned to the field to start the second inning. Starting pitche Julio De La Cruz ran into trouble quickly and could never get out of the hole. After walking the first two batters, De La Cruz then hit the next three batters in a row with pitches two walk in two runs. Mercifully he was finally replaced at this point by newly acquired Matt Sweeney out of the bullpen. Unfortunately Sweeney's first contribution was to issue a balk to let another run score. After finally getting one out a triple scored two more runs to give the Miracle a 5-1 lead before the inning was finally over.
The offense wasn't going to let the game go without a fight, and the team did rally for five runs of their own before the game was over. Still Ft. Myers bested the Threshers by adding one more run of their own in the seventh inning to win the game 6-5.
As mentioned the Miracle will be in town for two more games, so if the Threshers can keep up the solid play first place should be theirs once again before the week is over.
