In the first of several Wednesday afternoon game for this season, the Clearwater Threshers fell once again to the Sarasota Reds. The Threshers were first to strike with a run in the third inning, but the Reds quickly answered with two runs in the fourth to swipe the lead. The Threshers bounced right back with two runs of their own thanks to the first home run of the year by DH Branden Florence.
The game remained 3-2 in favor of the Threshers until the 8th inning when things got ugly. Pitcher Brian Reed gave up a single and double to start the inning, then intentionally walked the next batter to load the bases. The next batter bunted into a suicide squeeze, but an error on catcher Jeff Winchester allowed the run to score. After the Threshers finally managed to get one out the Reds crushed a triple to score three more runs, and then managed one more insurance run before getting out of the inning.
The Threshers were allowed one mercy run in the ninth inning, but that was far too little far too late as the team went down 7-4 in the game.
