After being drafted out of the University of Mississippi in 2008 Cody finished the summer with the Williamsport Crosscutters where he played in 75 games and posted a .272 BA while setting the team record for RBIs in a season.

In 2009 Overbeck skipped Lakewood and played the season with the Clearwater Threshers where he hit .230 in 96 games.
